C&C Generals: Zero Hour: Previews

Command and Conquer - it does exactly what it says on the tin. You Command, then you Conquer. A simple formula that once revolutionised the RTS world. The last release in the series, Generals, finally took what was a stagnating series into the modern 3D world and was one of the most enjoyable examples of the genre in recent times. Well soon that game is going to get its first expansion pack, and boy do the boys at developers EA LA have something special lined up for us in Zero Hour.

Additional features have been incorporated in the multiplayer. There's going to be a mixture of new multiplayer maps along with a number of a few familiar ones from the original game. Players will, naturally, be able to use the new units, strategies, upgrades, and structures throughout the multiplayer missions, so it's bound to bring some fresh moments to the experience. You'll also be able to participate in online co-op matches or simply enjoy a standard head-to-head all-out war for global domination, against a multitude of "live" opponents.

"When we were first getting underway with Zero Hour, we knew we could just do what everyone expects..." said Bonin. "Slap in a bunch of new maps, new units, new missions and say that's that. But while we DO have all of these things, numbers are not the emphasis. Our focus is on strategies. We've spent a lot of time watching how people are playing Generals, and we want to give them a new experience that best complements their strategies."

The heart of the game is the new challenge mode. There will be nine new generals, each with their own strategies, personalities, tactics and taunts. Right now, there is a general who is all defense (the "turtle" strategy), a radiation general (nukes, nukes everywhere), a tank rush general (get your defenses up early), a toxin general (GLA ties), a camouflage general (you like hide & seek?), and an Air Force general (complete with flyboy attitude). The others have not yet been unveiled.

Bonin then showed us some of the new units that will be put into Zero Hour and all three sides will have new units, structures and upgrades to play with. On the US side, players can expect to use a new microwave tank that can burn both units as well as the people inside of them. A new structure called the firebase will have both a new artillery cannon as well as emplacements for up to four infantry units to use. One of the new Chinese units in Zero Hour will be a huge helicopter called the Helix that serves several uses, such as a transport for infantry and a aerial napalm attack.

Along with the specialized generals, Zero Hour will feature additional units. The GLA now has the ability to make motorcycles, super-fast transport vehicles that can be loaded with any unit you wish. So, if you can't stand the slow, screaming crawl your suicide bombers take to get to their target, put them on a motorcycle, and get them there that much faster.

We got a hands-on look at the upcoming expansion pack for Command & Conquer: Generals at today's Camp EA event. It's no secret that we thought Command & Conquer Generals was a damn good game. Unique sides and balanced gameplay along with some interesting missions and a campaign that, while not strictly story based, pushed the experience along at a perfect pace made that game a keeper in the realm of the RTS. And EALA is coming back this fall with an expansion pack for it. After getting a good long look at the additions, improvements, and new modes, it's pretty obvious that they're putting a huge effort into adding a lot of new gameplay for owners of the original. While it's still a long ways out, the amount of content is certainly along the lines of the recently released WarCraft III expansion pack, Frozen Throne.
